Leading a Community Workshop
Community Health Workshops are an opportunity to learn more about your health and how to provide your own healthcare at home. At Third Root, we value returning to a home health tradition, where the first care is offered and taught in the home. We recognize the wealth of knowledge and skills in our community, and we invite you to share your knowledge with us and other community members at Third Root.
Criteria for Workshops
Though you don’t need to be an expert in your field to lead a workshop, you should have a decent level of knowledge and experience in your subject. Your workshop should be related to healthcare and/or social justice. Workshops may either be offered as a one-time event, or as an on-going series.
Appropriate Workshop Topics
In the past we have found some topics to be more successful than others. This list is meant to be a guide rather than a list of requisites.
- Be as specific as possible.
- Interactive topics tend to be popular.
- Choose something practical and/or relevant to the community.
Past successful topics include an intro to fermentation, partner yoga and Thai massage, meditation for youth and herbal remedies for kids.
What Will it Cost Me/How Much Money Can I Make?
There is a room fee of $30 to lead a workshop. Our workshops are offered to the community on a sliding scale, and we can work together to set a reasonable cost or donation for attending the workshop. You receive all income generated from the workshop up to $100. For income over $100, we receive a percentage.
How Do I get Started?
Preparing a workshop is simple!
- Fill out the Workshop Application Form (104K PDF) and mail or deliver in person to Third Root, Attention: Workshops. You can also email the form to workshops@thirdroot.org. Remember to be as specific as possible in your description.
- After going over your form, we will contact you to set up an interview, where we can discuss your workshop more fully and set a date.
- Publicize! You are responsible for getting the word out about your workshop. You are expected to create and post fliers, post to blogs and community boards, and let people know by word of mouth about your workshop. We let our students and patients know about all workshops, but we cannot guarantee attendance. The more effort you put into publicizing the event, the greater the turnout will be!
