Realizing Your Rhythms Summer Edition
w/ Avi-Rose, Jess Turner, & Laura Ruocco
Being resilient looks a lot of different ways & harm-reduction strategies are where it’s at! That also goes for anything that helps us connect to ourselves & the world at large when our nervous systems may be telling us that keeping busy, overworking, or avoidance & hiding are the only ways out. We believe the only way out is through: through listening, through attuning, and through showing up for the brave and continuous work of collective liberation and healing.
Living in harmony with the seasons helps heal disconnection from our natural world and is a wonderful form of deep listening. It offers a pathway to the practice of being in our world as awake and actualized beings capable of staying present for the resistance that’s needed! Building off of lessons on the rhythms & energetics of each season, together we will make our own seasonal medicines and explore foods, herbs, movements, breathwork, heart-work, and practical coping strategies to align with the seasons so we can show up: for ourselves, our loved ones, our commitments, our values, and our movements.

Jess Turner is a Black herbalist, urban farmer and educator who was raised in a working-class family in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay watershed, where her love of the plant world began. Her herbal practice is centered on helping marginalized communities build resilience through land-based healing practices. She has farmed and studied plants in Hawai’i, Saint Croix, North Carolina, Puerto Rico and the Hudson Valley.
Laura Marie Ruocco is a Brooklyn based herbalist. She believes that helping to reconnect people with plant medicine is an integral to the work of healing ourselves and healing the earth. She has studied herbal medicine in NYC since 2010, and more recently learned from the plants in the forests, open fields, and wetlands of upstate New York. More info at www.lauramarie.org
Avi-Rose, MS, E-RYT 200, is a Jewish & Queer community-based educator, researcher, project coordinator, and multi-modal health & well-being clinician. Their roots & realities include a tangle of working class lessons, artistic lineage, inter-generational trauma, white-skin privilege, and immeasurable resilience and laughter. Rising from and growing within these contexts, Avi-Rose dedicates their efforts to cultivating justice & joy in all they do.
The seeds of respect for learning with & from plants were first planted here at Third Root in 2009: Countless seasons, mentors, classroom & earth based lessons later, they have woven a vitalist herbal framework with multiple modalities and an anti-oppression approach in their work of supporting individual & collective healing. As an educator and clinician, they value creating accessible & generative space to both offer knowledge and support others in accessing their own insights & relationships with political analysis, their bodies, and the earth.
