Closing FAQs

Why is Third Root closing?

After 13 years of offering healing services to the local Flatbush community and those most impacted by systemic inequality, Third Root lost its lease. The current business cannot shoulder relocation costs on top of existing tenuous financial circumstances. Like many small businesses, moving through the pandemic has meant decreased capacity and greatly diminished revenue. It has also been an opportunity to pair down operating expenses and build a leaner and more effective model, which afforded us a successful re-opening despite  great challenges. While working to enrich our business model in a rapidly-changing environment, we see how capitalism does not recognize wellness for black, brown, queer, trans, dis/abled, formerly incarcerated, and working class people

Is there anything we can do to prevent the closure?

Over the years, we have launched many grassroots fundraisers to help us get by, which have been lifelines.  At this time, we have chosen not to pursue further asks or pitches toward this end.  We calculate that we’d need to secure about $700K to overcome the many economic barriers, secure a new lease, relocate and remain in business and flourish. Absent that level of full sustainable financial support, we are not willing to continue with unsustainable economic practices to keep our doors open, like reducing wages, deferring pay, or taking on more loans.  We choose to shutter our doors with dignity and integrity, as many, if not most other holistic health centers in Brooklyn and NYC have had to do.
